The Ministry of Education and Research of Romania, in collaboration with UNICEF in Romania and the European Commission, is organizing on Tuesday, 16 September 2025, the international TAIEX Workshop, dedicated to presenting education reforms implemented with the support of the European Commission’s Technical Support Instrument (TSI).
The event, hosted by the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest (Amphitheatre “Radu Voinea”), brings together representatives of education ministries from several EU Member States, European Commission and UNICEF experts, academics, NGOs, school principals, teachers, school counsellors, students, and parents (agenda with details on timing/speakers/topics is attached).
The workshop will focus on two major themes:
- Combating school segregation: Romania will present its new legislative and methodological framework for monitoring, preventing, and combating segregation, developed with the support of the European Commission and UNICEF. Other Member States (Bulgaria, Czechia, Portugal and Slovakia) will share their reforms on school desegregation.
- Social-emotional learning (SEL) and students’ well-being: good practices from Member States (Finland, France, Spain, and Malta) will be presented, alongside ongoing reform measures in Romania.
👉 A synthesis of the first national report on the analysis of the risks of school segregation in the Romanian education system will be presented in the workshop, based on the data from the first national monitoring of school segregation in 2024-2025 school year and carried out with the support of UNICEF. The final report is still in progress.
👉 On this occasion, the Comprehensive analysis of the well-being and mental health of lower-secondary school students in Romania was launched, based on research conducted in Romanian schools, and produced under the EU-funded TSI project. This is the first report of its kind at national level and provides essential data for the development of public policies in the fields of education and children’s mental health.
“Equitable education and safe, supportive schools are major priorities for the Ministry of Education and Research. Through close cooperation with the European Commission and UNICEF, Romania is taking important steps towards building an inclusive school environment where every child has the chance to reach their full potential,” stated Daniel David, Minister of Education and Research.
“Today marks a milestone in our cooperation with the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research to make education more inclusive. By providing technical support on school desegregation and the promotion of well-being and mental health, the European Commission is supporting crucial reforms to provide equal opportunities for all young people to succeed and thrive in school,” highlighted Judit Rozsa, Director in SG REFORM of the European Commission.
"Today's event, and the report we are launching on this occasion, are particularly important for adapting education to the emerging needs of children and society, ensuring that no child is left behind. I would like to thank the Ministry of Education and Research, the European Commission, and the Polytechnic University, and I assure them that UNICEF remains a dedicated partner in making children's right to inclusive, quality education a reality," said Anna Riatti, UNICEF Representative in Romania.
The TAIEX Workshop is part of the projects financed through the Technical Support Instrument (TSI), managed by the European Commission through SG REFORM, with the aim of supporting Member States in implementing structural reforms that enhance equity and quality in education.
