In the wake of Myanmar’s deadliest earthquake in decades, children’s lives have been turned upside down. On 28 March 2025, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, swiftly followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock. More than 3,600 people have lost their lives, over 4,800 are injured, and millions, including nearly 3 million children, are in urgent need of assistance. Homes, schools, and hospitals have been destroyed, leaving families displaced and children enduring significant hardship and uncertainty in already challenging conditions.

UNICEF teams are on the ground, working tirelessly to reach children and families with urgent support. Alongside emergency water, health, and nutrition supplies, UNICEF is prioritising the mental health and wellbeing of children by providing mental health and psychosocial support services and delivering recreation kits to the hardest-hit communities. These kits offer children a chance to play, learn, recover and restore hope and a sense of normalcy amid the crisis.

A young boy demonstrates his football skills with confidence while other children gather around, cheering for him. Nearby, children work together to inflate a ball, eagerly preparing for their chance to play. These moments of play provide children with essential opportunities to simply be children again, even as they navigate the challenges of life after the earthquake.

"When children play, they momentarily escape the harsh realities around them," explains Mra Thuzar, UNICEF Education Officer who is supporting the children after the earthquake, despite losing her own home in the disaster.

"These moments of joy are not just about fun, they're essential stepping stones on children's paths to recovery, helping them process trauma and rebuild their sense of security in a world that has suddenly become unpredictable."

UNICEF’s recreation kits contain more than 25 different items, such as footballs, volleyballs, basketballs, skipping ropes, chalk, exercise books, whistles, board games, play parachutes, and more. They are packed in a lockable metal box for safe storage and easy transport. Each kit supports both individual and group activities, fostering inclusion, friendship, and resilience among children in emergencies.

Even as families rebuild their lives, the power of play is helping children rediscover hope and strength. Through these moments of joy and connection, UNICEF is committed to ensuring every child has the chance to smile again and look to the future with confidence.
