For every child, OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN
Summer play and learning
Children acquire foundational learning skills such as counting and reading at pre-school and primary education. However, COVID-19 has negatively impacted the learning opportunities of young children globally, causing learning loss and detriment to individual as well as socio-economic development. Mongolia is not exception to this.
Children of grades 3-5 of Dundgobi and Tuv provinces attended the Summer Education Programme supported by UNICEF Mongolia and learned mathematics, language and human & nature subjects through playing. The programme aimed to help primary school children to learn through creative, fun activities as well as to increase access to pre-school education.
M.Gerelt-Od , the 3rd grade student, said “Apart from riding horses for the horseraces, I usually spend my summer doing mostly nothing. But this year, I am happy that I attended the summer programme with my brother and friends from school. Upper-grade students helped me a lot and I was able to learn a new thing in mathematics through a cooking activity, which we did together”.
Young children from remote areas often struggle during their first year of school as they need to interact with people other than their family members. A teacher from Erdenedalai soum, Mrs Kh.Tseren said “The fact that mobile kindergarten and school operate together has many advantages such as ensuring linkage between pre-school and primary school education, providing opportunities for kindergarten and school teachers to work together and for children to learn through play. Children from any age are mingling well and learning to adapt within the community.”
UNICEF hopes these children from Summer Education Programme are happily waiting for school to start. UNICEF also believes that this programme will contribute not only to improving learning opportunities for children in remote areas but also to the implementation of education quality reform initiatives as well as the pilot of innovative pedagogical methods in this regard.
