UNICEF supports access to STEAM education

Chișinău, July 7, 2022. Today, the first mobile educational laboratory for young people in the Republic of Moldova was launched. Specifically, a bus equipped with robotics kits and laptops will travel across the country to organize workshops in rural areas, including within refugee centers. This initiative will help young people develop skills and knowledge in fields such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The "STEAM on Wheels" laboratory is an innovative awareness initiative by GirlsGoIT to raise awareness among girls and boys about STEAM education and opportunities. The project is implemented by TEKEDU, with financial support from UNICEF Moldova and other development partners.

The educational laboratory will operate until the end of the current year and is expected to reach approximately 5,000 young people in Moldova.

"Education is a fundamental right and a source of empowerment for children, especially for girls. This is also true for fields such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, even though less than 5% of girls choose to pursue higher education in these fields. STEAM on Wheels is a project aimed at sparking girls' curiosity about STEAM subjects, improving their digital skills, and encouraging them to pursue knowledge and careers in these fields," said Alexandru Petrov, UNICEF Moldova's adolescent program officer.
