Qualitative study on the factors influencing child vaccination in the Roma community in the Republic of Moldova
About
Roma communities in the Republic of Moldova show significantly lower child immunization rates compared to the general population. Although official data indicate approximately 10,000 Roma people, unofficial estimates suggest up to 250,000. This study, conducted by the Ministry of Health and UNICEF Moldova between May 2025 and February 2026 in Otaci and Soroca, aimed to identify the barriers limiting the acceptance and use of immunization services, as well as to co-design culturally adapted interventions together with Roma communities.
The research applied a behavioural science approach guided by the COM-B model (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation), integrating human-centred design and participatory methods. Data were collected through 12 focus group discussions and 30 in-depth interviews with mothers, fathers, caregivers, family members, healthcare providers, social workers, teachers, and community leaders. In addition, two participatory workshops were organized, thus ensuring shared ownership of the findings and solutions.
