During one of the Girls’ Life Skills package sessions supported by UNICEF, pairs of girls sat facing each other, sharing their struggles as young women in their communities. They spoke about societal pressures, unspoken rules, and the expectations placed on them simply because of their gender. A common theme emerged—the belief that gender should not determine what someone can or cannot do.
One voice stood out. Imane, 18 years old, spoke passionately about her love for football and the resistance she faced at home. Each time she expressed her desire to play, her family discouraged her: "It’s not for girls." She knew it was unfair, but how could she change their minds?
Through the Girls’ Life Package, Imane learned about gender norms, negotiation, and self-advocacy. The sessions helped her realize that standing up for herself didn’t mean confrontation—it meant communicating effectively. Later that evening, Iman sent a message to her trainer: "I talked to my family about it. And for the first time, they listened. I explained why playing football matters to me, and they agreed to let me play!"
She applied the skills she had gained—actively listening to their concerns, expressing her passion with confidence, and proposing compromises. This time, instead of dismissing her, her family recognized her determination and gave her a chance. For Imane, it wasn’t just about football—it was about inspiring other girls to speak up, challenge limitations, and pursue their passions. "If I could change their minds, I know other girls can too."
Iman faced her own challenges but tackled them with determination. She continuously worked to develop her skills and build her self-confidence, refusing to let doubt hold her back. During the Life Skills training, she naturally emerged as a leader, guiding discussions and encouraging her peers to express their thoughts openly.
What made Iman stand out was her belief in the power of collaboration. She understood that leadership wasn’t just about taking charge—it was about bringing others together. She fostered teamwork, making sure every girl felt heard and valued. Through her support, she strengthened a sense of unity, proving that when girls uplift one another, they can overcome barriers and redefine their potential.
Through the Tailored Girls' Life Skills Package offered by UNICEF and its partners, adolescent girls are gaining the tools to navigate challenges, build confidence, and take initiative in their communities. More importantly, the program fosters a network of solidarity and empowerment, where girls support one another and work together to shape a brighter future.
