The UNICEF report titled From the first 1,000 days to a resilient future. Environmental and climate education for early childhood in Latin America and the Caribbean highlights that investment in policies and programs focused on the first years of human development have a triple dividend: promote climate resilience and adaptive capacity, protect individual potential and promote sustainable development.
The report identifies that 24 countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region include environmental topics in their legislation at all levels of education, including early childhood; however, only three of them include specific curricular content on climate change aimed at early childhood.
UNICEF calls countries in the region to:
- Put girls and boys, especially early childhood, at the centre of climate action and environmental protection.
- Increase funding for early childhood programs and services.
- Strengthen alliances between ministries of environment and education,
- Integrate the topic of climate change into formal education curricula, specially during early childhood for its transformational impact.
