Understanding child well-being everywhere

Growing up in a wealthy country does not guarantee a happy and healthy childhood. Indeed, even in the midst of wealth, children still face multiple deprivations that affect their health, well-being and futures. UNICEF has a universal mandate to protect the rights of all children, regardless of where they live. And UNICEF Innocenti contributes research, evidence and foresight to help fulfil that mission.

Since 2000, the Innocenti Report Card series has focussed on the rights and well-being of children in the countries of the European Union (EU) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) – some of the world’s wealthiest countries. The reports have delved into critical questions such as: How many children live in poverty in rich countries? What are the inequalities that children experience at school? What are children’s living conditions? How many children have access to clean, green play spaces? What is the state of children’s mental health in today’s world?

The series show that even in countries with strong social, economic and environmental conditions, governments fall short of providing the support needed for every child to thrive. With research, evidence, data and timely policy recommendations, the Report Card informs and influences debate on how to protect children’s rights and foster their well-being and futures.
