Technical note: Building climate resilience in Indonesian health care facilities

Highlights

This Technical Note highlights UNICEF Indonesia’s efforts to strengthen climate resilience in health care facilities through the integration of the PERIKSA (Perangkat Penilaian Risiko Iklim Sanitasi dan Air Minum) tool with WASHFIT (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Facility Improvement Tool). Implemented in 26 Puskesmas across five provinces, the pilot assessed vulnerabilities, capacities, and risks to water and sanitation systems from climate-related hazards. The findings show a significant improvement in the Climate Resilience Index, from 71% to 81% within a six-months period, demonstrating that the PERIKSA–WASHFIT framework can effectively enhance the preparedness and sustainability of primary health services. The study provides valuable insights for mainstreaming climate resilience into national health and WASH policies, ensure sustainable and resilient healthcare services across Indonesia.
