Desk Review: Pediatric Tuberculosis with a Focus on Indonesia
Synthesized learnings from approaches to pediatric TB in high-burden countries that could be applicable in Indonesia.

Indonesia has made substantial progress towards WHO’s END Tuberculosis (TB) 2030 targets. Yet, better and innovative approaches are required to effectively identify and screen children exposed to, at high risk of or with TB and to improve management of pediatrics TB in Indonesia. In 2019, 35 per cent of TB cases in children aged 0-14 years were not notified to the Indonesia’s National TB Program and only 9.3 per cent of children aged under 5 years who were household contacts of bacteriologically confirmed TB cases were on TB preventive treatment. Improving these conditions will require innovative and integrated approaches, as well as partnership with relevant stakeholders.
UNICEF, through this desk review, aims to provide an overview of the pediatric TB landscape globally and in Indonesia and to synthesize learnings from approaches to pediatric TB in other high burden countries that could be applicable to Indonesian settings. The document proposes recommendations for the next steps of a pediatric TB implementation model in high burden areas, potentially with an integrated program approach that is feasible for upscaling by the government and relevant partners in other regions within the country.
