Highlights
India is one of the major emerging economies of the Global South undergoing an urban revolution. The World Bank has estimated that by 2036, 600 million people will be living in urban cities in India, representing 40% of the population13. The ongoing urban revolution offers the country a great opportunity for economic, social, and ecological transformation.
At the same time, the speed and scale of urbanization bring challenges, such as meeting accelerated demand for affordable housing, infrastructure, and basic services, especially for the urban poor children, many of them forced to spend a considerable part of their lives on the streets. In the developing world, street children make up a sizable portion of the population and have been reported to be particularly susceptible to human rights violations like sexual abuse, exploitation, and violence.
