On 2 October 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India’s Swachh Bharat (Clean India) targets to be met by 2 October 2019. Having come this far, it was time to measure the impact of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). “Has SBM met its intended impacts, in terms of toilet coverage and use, as well as the socio-economic benefits that are claimed to come from improved sanitation and hygiene?”. This report highlights the results of a study undertaken by UNICEF India at the request of the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation to assess the economic impacts of SBM.
