The Ministry of Justice and UNICEF inaugurate child court in Abu Tig – Assiut

Assiut, 6 December 2023- Today, the first child-friendly court was inaugurated in Upper Egypt in Abu Tig, Assiut, under the leadership of His Excellency Counselor Omar Marwan - Minister of Justice. This is part of the fruitful cooperation between the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Ministry of Justice to provide support for the establishment of model courts for children in several governorates across Egypt.

The child court in Abu Tig is the first child-friendly court in Upper Egypt. It was designed and furnished in compliance with all the international standards and requirements to promote children’s rights. The courtrooms are fully equipped with state-of-the-art devices that fit the special nature and psychological needs of children, such as the child-friendly room. This room is equipped with a one-way mirror connected to both the court and judges’ rooms, with a video conference system installed which comes in line with the child protection measures.

The Ministry of Justice, with support from UNICEF, has equipped the room for observers and social experts working in the court so that they can carry out their assigned roles and duties.

Among the attendees were Counselor Rabie Qasim, Assistant Minister of Justice for the Court Buildings Sector, and Judge Amal Ammar, Assistant Minister of Justice for the Human Rights, Women and Children Sector and Counselor Nady Abdel Hafeez Mustafa, President of the North Assiut Court as well as an array of Ministry of Justice officials inaugurated the child court in Abu Tig in Assiut.

From UNICEF’s side, the inauguration was attended by Ms. Denise Ulwor, Chief of the Child Protection section and Ms. Rana Younis, Child Protection Officer.
