Zagreb, 26 May 2025 – The 8th Media Literacy Days brought together tens of thousands of children, young people, and their teachers, and librarians to explore one of the most important topics of the 21st century – media literacy. Organised by the Agency for Electronic Media and UNICEF, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Media and the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth, the initiative featured workshops, lectures, and panel discussions focused on digital footprints, privacy protection, and recognising disinformation.
A survey conducted by Ipsos for the Agency for Electronic Media and UNICEF revealed that 62.3% of young people have never had the opportunity to learn about media literacy. This makes the strong interest in developing media literacy skills and participating in Media Literacy Days all the more encouraging. The key figures speak for themselves:
- Over 37,000 participants took part – primarily children, young people, and educators.
- More than 730 events and 2,100 activities were held in 191 towns and cities across Croatia.
- 1,220 educators, teachers, librarians, and school staff organised events and activities.
- Nearly 400 primary and secondary schools and 65 kindergartens were involved.
A record 85 films were submitted by youth film clubs and individual young creators in the primary and secondary school categories for the film competition “Is This for Real?”, organised by the Agency for Electronic Media, UNICEF, and the Croatian Film Association. The Pula Film Festival also joined the initiative and will host the awards ceremony and screenings of the winning films.
This year also saw the release of new educational resources – the workshop guide “What Does the Internet Know About Me?” on digital footprints and privacy, and the educational video “What Are Disinformation?”. More than 70 educational materials, video lectures, and quizzes are available year-round on the portal medijskapismenost.hr, and are widely used in kindergartens, schools, libraries, and other institutions. These materials have been downloaded over 1.3 million times to date.
Media Literacy Days were launched in 2018 by the Agency for Electronic Media and the UNICEF Office for Croatia to educate and inform children, parents, educators, and teachers about media literacy. The initiative serves as a platform for collaboration, project development, and support for educators through the creation of media education resources. It is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Media and the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth. From 2018 to 2025, Media Literacy Days have engaged over 174,000 children, young people, and adults in more than 3,200 events.
Coordination support for part of this year’s programme was provided by the Association for the Promotion of Creativity and Equal Opportunities – Alternator.
