Why are children’s rights relevant to business?
Each and every day, businesses, large and small, affect the lives and rights of children, everywhere.
As a third of the world’s population, children are directly impacted as consumers of products and services, through exposure to marketing and advertising, as young workers or child labourers, as users of digital platforms, or through the environments where they live and play. Business activities that adversely impact parents and caregivers can also have indirect but significant impact on children.
It’s been over a decade since the release of the Children’s Rights and Business Principles – and progress has been slow. Children remain invisible in the design and implementation of responsible business strategies, policies and practices including corporate due diligence, and their voices remain largely unheard.
There can be no responsible business conduct vis-à-vis children unless their rights are built in from the very start. Systems that reach children are effective for everyone. By joining forces, shining a light on child rights impacts, and listening to children’s voices, we can deliver for children today and ensure a future fit for the next generation.
