The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the pre-existing learning crisis, setting back decades of progress in education. Without urgent action, we face a generational catastrophe.
Estimates suggest nearly two-thirds of 10-year-olds are now unable to read and understand a simple story.
These children are at risk of lifelong consequences as they fail to learn the basic skills that form the foundation for all future learning. This learning crisis is also a direct threat to the well-being of the children and young people affected.
The sutuation in Bulgaria
Almost every second young person in Bulgaria does not have basic reading and math skills.
Nearly 120,000 of the children who are in school are at risk of dropping out (MoE in Bulgaria, 2021).
In today's digital world, nearly every second young person in Bulgaria lacks basic digital skills (World skills clock).
Every fifth child is out of kindergarten and every sixth child is out of school (NSI, 2021).
Nearly 10,000 children with disabilities are not in school (UNICEF).
Every eighth child at the end of the 4th grade cannot read and understand a simple text
