Lusaka, Zambia – 5 June 2025 – The United Nations (UN) system in Zambia has learned with deep regret and sadness the death of Zambia’s Sixth Republican President, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu.
“President Lungu served his country with dedication. He will be remembered for Zambia’s strong and consistent participation in the United Nations and championing the fight against Gender-Based Violence and child marriage as well as enhancing gender equality and women’s representation in key decision-making positions such as his appointment of Zambia’s first female Vice-President. As we mourn the former head of state, we extend our condolences to the Lungu family, the Government and people of Zambia,” said UN Resident Coordinator in Zambia, Ms Beatrice Mutali.
