Government of Zambia and United Nations Zambia Launch of “Tisunge Zambia” 360 Advocacy and Awareness Raising Campaign
Lusaka, Zambia, 27 December 2024 — The Government of the Republic of Zambia, through the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services (MCDSS) and in partnership with the United Nations (UN) in Zambia, today officially launched the joint Tisunge Zambia campaign, a comprehensive advocacy and awareness initiative aimed at empowering, uplifting, and protecting the Zambia’s most vulnerable populations.
In line with the Government’s commitment to ending intergenerational poverty, the 2025 national budget has allocated 16.2 billion Zambian kwacha, accounting for 7.4% of the total budget, to social protection programmes. This significant investment underscores the importance of social protection, especially in light of the frequent and recurring shocks Zambia has faced in recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and, most recently, the cholera outbreak and the ongoing drought crisis.
The Tisunge Zambia campaign highlights the critical role of the Government of the Republic of Zambia and cooperating partners including the Governments of the Republic of Ireland, the Kingdom of Sweden, the Swiss Confederation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United Nations’ support in advancing the well-being of vulnerable communities. It features a series of social media posts, print materials, and radio broadcasts designed to raise awareness about the importance of social protection and the various initiatives undertaken by the Government to support those in need.
“Social protection is a cornerstone of our national development agenda. The TisungeZambia campaign is a testament to our dedication to ensuring that every Zambian has access to the support they need to lead a dignified life,” said the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, Ms. Angela Chomba Kawandami, emphasizing the campaign’s significance.
“The United Nations commends the Government of Zambia for its commitment to securing the lives of the people in Zambia through various social protection initiatives and interventions such as the Social Cash Transfer programme and Cash Plus initiatives including the Keeping Girls in School and Supporting Women’s Livelihoods interventions,” stated the UN Resident Coordinator, Beatrice Mutali.
