Displacement is one of the most notorious and inevitable outcomes of any conflict. Besides putting people in danger and depriving them of their homes and often essential rights, displacement entails numerous threats, epidemic outbreaks, and lack of safe food and water. With funding from King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), UNICEF distributes hygienic kits among people who now live in camps like the Agriculture Office Camp in Marib, eastern Yemen.

“When you become poor and homeless, you may start paying less attention to personal hygiene, cleanliness of your clothes, and the place you live in. It simply does not seem to matter that much anymore”, says Mohammed Mohammed Ahmed Al Kholani, who lives in an IDP camp in Marib.

Mohammed and his family of seven are among the displaced Yemenis who now live in a site for displaced persons in the Marib district.

“These kits contain personal hygiene products, soap, and washing powder to help people keep their houses and clothes clean, take care of their health and hygiene”, explains Assistant Project Coordinator, Abdullah Al Yahlisi. “It is vital. However, we face many challenges in our work mainly because people constantly move from one place to another.”

CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

We are grateful for receiving these hygienic kits”, says Munif Abdullah Ali Al Hawat, who now also lives in the Agriculture Office Camp in Marib with his family of six. “Yet We need more. These kits make a huge difference for us, but we wish they would account for the number of family members”, Munif adds.
