TASHKENT, July 31, 2024 – In Uzbekistan, special attention is given to promoting the practice of breastfeeding which is one of the most effective methods for ensuring the survival, health, and development of infants as well as mothers’ health.

"Supporting breastfeeding plays a crucial role in ensuring children's health and development," emphasized Elmira Basithanova, Deputy Minister of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan. "It is not only a physiological necessity but also one of the key elements of early development that affects the child's immunity and cognitive abilities. Breast milk is the ideal nutrition for infants in the early stages of their lives. By supporting breastfeeding, we create a healthy society where every mother has access to the necessary support and information to make informed decisions for her child's health."

In Uzbekistan, legislation supporting breastfeeding restricts the sale of breast milk substitutes. Switching to artificial formulas can lead to slowed growth and micronutrient deficiencies. Additionally, in places without proper sanitation and clean drinking water, breast milk substitutes can be life-threatening for the child.

To better support breastfeeding, comprehensive measures are needed to coordinate efforts of  various organizations such as healthcare institutions, the private sector, and civil society. Breastfeeding support programs and consultations with doctors and trained volunteers provide women with the knowledge and information they need during prenatal and postnatal care.

“When women are informed, empowered, and supported to breastfeed, the benefits extend to their children, to themselves and to society as a whole”, said Geoffrey Ijumba, UNICEF Deputy Representative in Uzbekistan. “As UNICEF we stand ready to support the Ministry of Health to ensure continued support for breastfeeding and improving monitoring systems to track improvements in policies and programmes, and in breastfeeding practices”, he added.

“Women should have the support they need to care for their children without having to choose between family and career. With respectful and helpful guidance from trained health professionals, and by stopping unfair baby formula promotions, we can ensure the health of all children and mothers. Together with our partners, we commit to promoting and supporting breastfeeding, creating a healthier future for everyone”, said Nazokat Kasymova, Public Health Officer, WHO Country Office – Uzbekistan.

Positive social norms that support and encourage breastfeeding can help empower mothers in these matters. In communities, the support of all family members is essential.
