A small child, a big struggle
For Gabriela, every breath counts

Gabriela is almost two years old and was born with Down syndrome and two heart conditions. At just two months and two weeks old, she had already undergone her first surgery. For such a small child, every breath was a struggle.
Today, Gabriela has difficulty breathing and requires constant check-ups, close monitoring, and special care. A simple respiratory virus can become a real danger.
Her mother didn’t always have support. She didn’t know what paperwork was needed, where to go, or how to get the help her child needed.
Support came from the community social worker, who helped the family obtain the disability certificate and the necessary documents to have the mother classified as a personal caregiver. These were essential steps for Gabriela to receive the care she needs.
Beyond all the challenges, Gabriela is a child who is growing up, discovering the world at her own pace, and who needs the chance to move forward.
UNICEF in Gabriela's life
