UNICEF and Romania’s First Lady reaffirm commitment to children’s rights and participation

BUCHAREST, 26 August 2026 – Romania’s First Lady, Mirabela Grădinaru, met on Tuesday with a UNICEF delegation led by Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF Regional Director for Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa to discuss advancing child rights and strengthening the participation of children and young people in decisions that affect their lives. 

The discussion highlighted Romania’s progress in promoting the voices of children and young people in public decision-making, including legislation adopted in 2024 to strengthen opportunities for children to contribute to the development of policies and legislation that affect them.  

“I know how important it is for every child to have access to care, protection, education and opportunities to develop. We should never forget that children are our number one priority.   The way we look after them today will shape the society we have tomorrow. I welcome the continued collaboration between Romania and UNICEF to support children and families, amplify the voices of young people and ensure that every child can reach their full potential, regardless of where they live or the circumstances into which they are born,” said Romania’s First Lady, Mirabela Grădinaru. 

“Children and young people have the right to be heard on issues that shape their futures. Romania has taken important steps to strengthen child participation and embed it in decision-making, and its experience can offer valuable lessons to countries in Europe and beyond. UNICEF stands ready to continue supporting efforts that place children at the centre of public policy and ensure every child can thrive,” said Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF Regional Director for Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. 

The meeting also covered Romania’s experience with the Integrated Community Services model and implementation of the European Child Guarantee, as well as opportunities to share lessons and good practices internationally. Discussion included continued cooperation on child participation, education, climate action, online safety and the prevention of violence against children.
