About
Slovakia has seen a sharp increase in the number of foreign nationals in recent years. As of December 2025, more than 360,000 foreign nationals live in the country (Ministry of Interior), driven by the arrival of refugees from Ukraine since 2022, but also by longer-term demographic change, increased labour mobility and the growing use of national visas. In this context, municipalities have become increasingly important actors in responding to the needs of refugee and migrant children and caregivers, often in the absence of a coherent national integration framework.
This project is implemented with the support of the European Commission under the Technical Support Instrument (Regulation (EU) 2021/240) and is delivered in partnership with UNICEF in six municipalities: Bialystok and Lublin (Poland), Bucharest and Timișoara (Romania), and Bratislava and Nitra (Slovakia).
