The theme of the 2024 World Children’s Day, “Listening to the Future,” underscores the vital importance of listening to children as the leaders of tomorrow, the heartbeat of today, and the hope for a brighter future. It is essential that we acknowledge their rights and work together to pave the way for their aspirations and dreams. In this regard, UNICEF continues its efforts to raise awareness of the issues currently affecting children and youth in the Sultanate of Oman. Through meetings and dialogue sessions with government officials, UNICEF seeks to assess students' awareness of societal challenges and encourage them to express their views on matters that directly influence their lives. This process not only helps to build their self-confidence but also fosters a deeper, more meaningful relationship between the community and the government, positioning children as active stakeholders in the decisions that shape their future. The discussion sessions involved ten students from public and private schools, special education institutions, and inclusive schools. The first session took place in the Wilayat of Nizwa on November 17, 2024, with Dr. Rashid bin Hamad Al Balushi ,Chairman of the Omani Human Rights Committee, hosted by the office of the Wali of Nizwa. The second session was held in the Wilayat of Sur with His Excellency Dr. Hilal bin Ali Al Sabti, Minister of Health, on December 2, 2024. This year's discussions focused on critical issues such as climate change, the quality of education, and ways to improve health services for children, both in general and within school environments. These discussions also explored other future-oriented topics in line with Oman Vision 2040. |
During the panel discussion, I emphasized the need to create a supportive environment for nurturing talent. I proposed the establishment of a dedicated authority for gifted individuals, which would be supervised by the Ministry of Education"
"Today, we have come together to emphasize our rights and collaboratively pave a path that aligns with our aspirations and dreams, as we are the heartbeat of today and the hope for tomorrow."
These dialogue sessions, organized by UNICEF in partnership with the Ministry of Education, are designed to empower students to voice their opinions with confidence, raising awareness of the importance of openly addressing the challenges that impact their personal development and progress across various aspects of life. Moreover, these sessions encourage leaders and decision-makers to actively listen to the perspectives of children and youth, involving them in decisions that will shape their futures. This process plays a crucial role in building trust between the community and the government, ensuring that the voices of young people are heard and valued.
"I am eager to continue my education, just like other students, and I hope my studies won’t be limited to the ninth grade. I sincerely request that the Ministry of Education carefully consider my appeal."
