Proudly delivering quality health care services
Celebrating the lifesaving contribution of nurses in Port Harcourt
Nurses are the backbone of Nigerian health care and often its heart and soul, answering the call of duty with bravery, come rain or shine.
One of such nurses is Nyingiwarifaa Briggs, Senior Nursing Officer at the Churchill Primary Health Care Centre in Port Harcourt, who was excited to learn about the International Nurses Day for the first time.
Nyingiwarifaa is in charge of the antenatal clinic, where she ensures all pregnant and nursing mothers who visit get quality information and care for their babies. She teaches mothers the correct way to practice exclusive breastfeeding for six months and recognizes mothers who do.
"Everything I do for mothers that makes them happy gives me joy, especially ensuring they receive free quality care. At this clinic, we don't charge for our services such as immunization, family planning, post-natal care. My colleagues and I look forward to every clinic day when mothers come in their numbers."
Celebrating Nurses' Day reminds us of nurses who changed our lives, working shifts with compassion and dedication. As the world recognizes nurses for their role in delivering health care services and for their dedication to improved maternal and neonatal child health, UNICEF and partners celebrate their continuous efforts in ensuring good health for every child.
Since 1947, when the Nursing Council of Nigeria was established in Nigeria by the Registration of the Nurses Ordinance of August 1947 to regulate and control the education and standards of the profession, millions of nurses have been enrolled by the council, making health care available for individuals, families and communities.
