Conquering Initial Jitters
A young mother embraces the journey of her first pregnancy with unwavering strength, a positive outlook, and the help of supportive supplements.
It's natural for anyone to experience a flutter of nerves when encountering something new for the first time. At just 26, Maryam Musa's first pregnancy has unfolded as a remarkable journey filled with bravery, exploration, and strength. Before experiencing pregnancy herself, Maryam paid little attention to the stories she heard about it. “I used to tell myself that if I make it a thing of the mind, I will stay strong through pregnancy,” she says.
Upon learning that she was going to be a mother, Maryam embraced that belief wholeheartedly. However, no amount of preparation can truly ready someone for the experience of a first pregnancy. “There were moments when I felt weak, nauseous, and exhausted,” she admits. She shared that there were days when she could hardly muster some energy. Then she realized pregnancy is not just a physical experience, it is emotional and mental as well''.
Maryam’s daily routine transformed in the blink of an eye. The vibrant young woman, once bustling through her days and caring for her family, now finds herself in need of more moments of rest “I never thought I would get tired so easily,” she laughs. “It’s amusing now, but back then, it felt overwhelming.” During one of her routine antenatal visits, Maryam was introduced to multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS). MMS is a daily prenatal tablet containing iron, folic acid, and a broader mix of essential vitamins and minerals, including the vitamins required for safe and healthy baby development. MMS, safe and cost-effective, is essential and beneficial in preventing anemia in expectant mothers.
For Maryam, the MMS truly transformed her experience “After a few weeks, I felt stronger and more energized,” she says. “I could walk around without being tired and do my chores without feeling drained. The baby also became more active. It gave me the confidence that I could see this pregnancy through.”
In Bauchi State, the state government, the Gates Foundation, and UNICEF have been working together to scale up MMS distribution. Over 134,000 bottles have been provided, along with training for health and community workers to guide and support pregnant women like Maryam.
As she approaches the final stretch of her pregnancy, Maryam eagerly anticipates the arrival of her little one, filled with excitement and hope. “I can’t wait to hold my baby,” she says, her eyes shining. “Knowing that I stayed strong and healthy through this pregnancy makes it even more special.”
Like many expectant mothers across Bauchi State, the MMS she is taking through her pregnancy has played a key role in keeping her energized and resilient, helping her manage the challenges of nausea, weakness, and fatigue. “I feel confident that I’ve given my baby the best start possible,” Maryam reflects. It's comforting that these supplements can help mothers and babies so much. Many of the mothers in Bauchi reported improved appetite, more baby movement, and more energy since they have been taking MMS.
For Maryam, the journey of her first pregnancy has been a mix of nervous moments, discovery, and triumph. Soon, she will meet the tiny bundle of joy that made every step worthwhile, a healthy baby born with the support of care, guidance, and the benefits of MMS.
