Statement on UNICEF’s cooperation in Nigeria and in Bauchi State

In relation to a recently published news story - UNICEF Exposes Nigeria’s Worsening Maternal Mortality Crisis | Streamline - UNICEF Nigeria wishes to clarify that it supports the Government of Nigeria's efforts to improve outcomes for children. As a longstanding development partner, UNICEF works alongside government institutions, which lead the development and implementation of national policies and programmes. UNICEF’s role is to provide technical expertise, evidence, and operational support in pursuit of our shared commitment to the rights and wellbeing of every child.

There is no new report released by UNICEF.

The figures referenced appear to be drawn from the United Nations Maternal Mortality Estimation Inter-Agency Group (MMEIG) report, Trends in Maternal Mortality: 2000–2023, which was released in April 2025 to coincide with World Health Day.
