Plateau Cholera outbreak.
Highlights
As of 20 April 2025, Nigeria recorded 1,307 suspected cholera cases and 34 deaths across 30 states and 98 Local Government Areas (LGAs), with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 2.6%, exceeding the national target of less than 1%. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) attributes the high CFR to poor access to clean water and sanitation, particularly in flood-prone and underserved areas. With the rainy season approaching its peak, the NCDC has warned of a potential increase in cholera transmission and urged states to activate their preparedness plans. However, localized outbreaks emerged in Plateau State on 9 May, 2025.
Cholera outbreak was confirmed in nine wards of Bokkos LGA, Plateau State, with 37 suspected cases (CFR 8.1%) and 3 deaths reported. UNICEF has deployed contingency WASH and health supplies to support the government-led response. However, only US$0.7 million of the HAC budgeted amount for rapid response and emergency preparedness programs has been received, leaving a 91% funding gap.
