Highlights

Since 2015, Mozambique has faced a series of socio-economic, natural, and health shocks that have compounded existing regional and social inequalities. Recent crises, including macroeconomic and fiscal shocks, the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous climate disasters, and ongoing conflicts, have resulted in economic slowdown, rising poverty rates, and increased inequality. In a country where over half of the population are children, these challenges have severe implications for their well-being.

This report provides an updated and comprehensive analysis of child poverty and deprivation in Mozambique using the latest data from the Household Budget Surveys (IOF) of 2019/20 and 2022. It builds on previous findings from 2014/15 contained in the report “Multidimensional Child Poverty in Mozambique” published in 2020 (UNICEF, 2020), to present the levels and trends of child poverty across different age groups, regions, and genders, over the 2014/15-2022 period. The analysis employs the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) methodology, alongside the Multidimensional Overlapping Deprivation Analysis (MODA) approach, to assess the scale and severity of deprivations in key areas of child well-being. Moreover, monetary child poverty is also analysed and assessed in association with multidimensional poverty, using various metrics.
