“Energy Shift Leaders” program successfully develops green skills in youth

Ulaanbaatar, January 28, 2025 — UNICEF, in collaboration with the School of Energy at Mongolian University of Science and Technology and Governor office of the Bayanzurkh district has successfully implemented the "Energy Shift Leaders" program. This initiative is part of the Green Rising initiative, which aims to develop green skills in children and youth.

Announced in 2024, the program selected 27 young leaders aged 18-24. These leaders received comprehensive training in renewable energy, including solar energy, and were trained as trainers. They then shared their knowledge with over 650 students from 10 schools in the capital. With support from professional teachers at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology, solar energy micro-projects were implemented in these schools.

Projects included installing solar energy systems for the school's art room, entrance lighting, a "heat curtain" above the external entrance, and a renewable energy awareness corner. These projects were developed based on the students' needs and use technology to solve real-world problems while providing renewable energy to schools.

Green Rising, an initiative led by UNICEF, Generation Unlimited and partners, supports children and youth-led grassroots climate action for a faster and fairer transition to a low-carbon economy. The aim is to directly engage 10 million youth, particularly girls, to take action by 2026 through volunteering; green skills, jobs, entrepreneurship and advocacy. UNICEF is committed to expanding this initiative in Mongolia.
