In the arid lands of the commune of Fanga, 70 kilometers from Kayes, the daily struggle for water was a significant challenge for the inhabitants. The river, the only source of water available, was often contaminated, leading to recurrent diseases, especially among children.
In this precarious context, UNICEF, with the support of its partners, rose up to find sustainable solutions to this water crisis. The establishment of water supply systems marked a turning point for the Fanga community.
A basic water supply system was established, with five strategically installed water points. Three of these points were placed at the heart of the community, providing easy access to clean water for nearly 1,200 people. Additionally, a local dispensary benefited from a water point, thus improving hygiene conditions for medical care.
But the impact did not stop there. At the village school, two blocks of two latrine cabins were constructed, along with an additional water point. These facilities ensured adequate sanitary conditions for 141 students, 62 of whom are girls.
In parallel, fifteen members of water point management committees were trained, thus strengthening the sustainability of the projects and community involvement in their management.
These achievements have had a transformative impact on the lives of Fanga's inhabitants. Waterborne diseases have significantly decreased, allowing children to live healthier lives and attend school regularly. Access to clean water has also freed up time and energy for other activities, thereby enhancing the overall well-being of the community.
Thanks to the support of UNICEF and the financial backing from Sweden, Fanga has found a new breath. Potable water has become a daily reality and a symbol of hope and progress for this resilient community's future.
