In the streets of Fénérive-Est, in eastern Madagascar, a light is emerging, illuminating a horizon of possibilities for out-of-school youth. Oscamidi Anne, 18, embodies determination and hope for an entire generation. As a participant in the UPSHIFT program, she is developing a solar panel project for electrical installation.

Oscamidi grew up in the heart of Fénérive-Est in a family constantly facing financial difficulties. She dropped out of school in the second cycle of secondary education but embraced life with a burning passion. Determined to forge her own path, Oscamidi is a beneficiary of UPSHIFT. This program empowers out-of-school youth by providing them with entrepreneurial and professional skills for their social and economic integration. Through this program, led by the Ministry of Technical Education and Vocational Training and supported by UNICEF with various donations, training, and capacity building, Oscamidi is developing expertise that allows her family to benefit from electricity.

At the Fénérive-Est Vocational Training Center, she joins a group aspiring to become electrical installers and solar panel specialists. As the only girl in the group, her deliberate and bold choice is symbolic: challenging preconceived gender norms. “No job should be defined by gender,” Oscamidi asserts. She is determined to prove that any job can be done by a woman just as well as by a man.

Oscamidi acquires knowledge during the "bootcamp" phase, demonstrating an aptitude and passion for her field. She has proudly overcome technical challenges and now masters the complexity of electrical circuits and solar panels.

Today, as the sun sets, the solar panels illuminate Oscamidi’s home. She applies her solar installation skills at home, demonstrating her ability to turn theoretical learning into tangible achievements. This personal initiative underscores her commitment to a sustainable and self-sufficient future.

Moreover, as the only girl in the group of learners, Oscamidi was selected by UNICEF to represent Madagascar at a workshop in Côte d'Ivoire last May. This pan-African event allowed her to share her experience, learn from other participants, and strengthen her commitment to empowering youth and women in technical fields.

Currently, Oscamidi and her group are seeking partnerships to launch their project sustainably. They are looking for collaborations with local solar panel companies and non-governmental organizations specializing in renewable energy. These partnerships could provide them with necessary resources such as equipment, ongoing training, and market opportunities. Additionally, establishing links with financial institutions to obtain microcredits could help them finance the expansion of their activities.

Oscamidi Anne embodies the courage and perseverance of young people who dare to dream beyond society's imposed limits. In her eyes shines the light of the future, a future where gender barriers yield to the unwavering strength of talent and determination.
