Kansai Gaidai University Signs Landmark Internship Agreement with UNICEF Lao PDR

HIRAKATA, OSAKA — Kansai Gaidai University and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Lao PDR have officially entered into a new internship agreement, establishing a framework for student placements with UNICEF Lao PDR. 

The agreement reflects a shared commitment to expanding practical learning opportunities for students and strengthening cooperation in the field of international development. It marks the first time UNICEF Lao PDR has signed an internship agreement with a university.

Breaking Barriers for Undergraduate Excellence 

While internships within United Nations agencies are traditionally very competitive, this agreement presents a rare internship opportunity exceptionally for undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Global Engagement, an innovative liberal arts and all-English program focused on addressing global issues. 

Since 2024, Kansai Gaidai University has conducted study visits to Lao PDR, where students have had the opportunity to meet with international organizations, NGOs, and educational institutions to better understand the world of international development. This foundational engagement paved the way for pivotal three-month internships in June 2025 with three students interning at UNICEF, UNFPA, and UNDP in Lao PDR.

Impact on the Ground

Ms. Sakurako Kano (left in the photo), a rising junior at the College of Global Engagement, interned for the Education Unit at UNICEF Lao PDR. During her internship, Ms. Kano contributed to field research for education programs, produced human interest stories highlighting local challenges and successes, and developed substantive proposals and recommendations for the organization.

A Vision for the Future 

Based on this agreement, Kansai Gaidai University is launching the UNICEF Internship Program as a new experiential learning opportunity for students in the College of Global Engagement. This program will offer: 

•  Placements lasting up to one year; 
• Valuable opportunities to interact with UNICEF experts and other stakeholders.
• Rigorous training in practical expertise and problem-solving.
