Highlights

In the last two decades, many efforts were made by the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean to expand access to preschool and primary education. However, evaluations on educational quality, such as PISA 2018 and ERCE 2019, show a significant decline in learning at the regional level.

The above shows that attending school does not guarantee that girls and boys achieve the basic learning that they should have acquired in their primary education. This situation was aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the effects of which increased the estimated learning poverty for 2022 by 79 percent of 10-year-old girls and boys who cannot read and understand a simple text

In order to address learning losses in students from 3rd to 6th grade, UNICEF encourages schools to adapt their teaching activities to the actual achievement level of each child so that they can catch up easily. This document details the lessons learned of the implementation of the Teaching at the Right Level (TARL) methodology aimed at improving the level of basic learning in reading and mathematics.
