Kosovo Joins Global Effort to Make Learning Accessible for Every Child
Making learning accessible: ADT-Studio, an innovative AI-powered tool, converts educational materials into accessible digital textbooks for every learner.
More than 40 representatives from government institutions, education authorities, schools, publishers, organizations of persons with disabilities, and UNICEF Kosovo team came together in Istog from 2–4 June 2026 for a three-day workshop on Accessible Digital Textbooks (ADT) organized by UNICEF Global Learning Innovation Hub, marking Kosovo’s entry into UNICEF’s global ADT initiative.
The workshop aimed to build the capacity of national stakeholders to independently produce Accessible Digital Textbooks using ADT-Studio, an innovative, AI-powered tool, that converts educational materials into accessible digital formats. The ultimate goal is to enable institutions to create and maintain inclusive learning resources with minimal ongoing technical support, as Kosovo advances its digital transformation and education reform agenda, ensuring that all children can access quality learning materials remains a priority.
For many learners, particularly children with disabilities, traditional textbooks can present significant barriers to participation and learning. Accessible Digital Textbooks help address these challenges by integrating features such as text-to-speech, image description, sign language, enhanced navigation, and other accessibility functions directly into learning materials.
The initiative is grounded in the principles of Universal Design for Learning, ensuring that accessibility is built into educational content from the start rather than added later.
Beyond technology, the workshop highlighted the importance of collaboration among government institutions, educators, publishers, and disability organizations in creating a more inclusive education system.
Following the training, the initiative will be piloted in ten schools across Kosovo, generating practical lessons to inform future scale-up. Through this effort, Kosovo is taking an important step toward ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, participate, and thrive in an increasingly digital world.
