“Opportunities are the keys that unlock our futures,” says Souhaib, a determined 20-year-old participant in the AZEM employment programme supported by UNICEF. After finishing high school in 2023, he stood at a crossroads, facing the weight of responsibility with unwavering resolve.

As he graduated, Souhaib dove headfirst into the job market. “I had to work instead of going to university,” he shares. “My family’s financial situation is tough. I’m the eldest son in a family of seven, and my father’s retirement barely covers our bills.” The pressure to provide for his siblings pushed him to seek employment.

One day, while searching for jobs online, a comment on his post caught his eye: “Apply at Sigma; they have openings!” Encouraged, he submitted his application and landed an interview. “Despite not selected for the job, they recommended me to apply for the AZEM employment programme supported by UNICEF,” he recalls. “At first, I thought they were turning me away, but they reassured me that this training was a steppingstone to being ready for the job.”

At the AZEM employment programme, supported by UNICEF, Souhaib found more than just skills; he discovered a community. “I learned essential skills like communication and time management. I really enjoyed everything,” he says, recalling the vibrant atmosphere of the training sessions. When he arrived for his first day at Sigma, he felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. “The machines were intimidating! I wondered if I’d be able to handle them,” he admits.

However, rigorous safety standards and mentorship from experienced staff soon eased his fears. “They took the time to ensure I felt comfortable,” Souhaib reflects. “With their support, I started to find my footing in this new environment.”

Now, just under two months into his role, he beams with pride as he shares, “I’m still in training, but I’m getting paid.” His first paycheck marked a significant milestone in his life. “I didn’t spend it on myself. Instead, I bought necessities for the house and gave money to my dad for my siblings. It felt incredible to contribute.”

The joy on his father’s face when he received the news of Souhaib’s first salary was priceless. “He didn’t care about the amount; he was just proud that his son was working,” Souhaib says with a big smile across his face.

Adjusting to this new chapter hasn’t been without its challenges. “Responsibility can be daunting. I used to live a simple life—school was my only job,” he explains. “But I’ve learned that with time, you adapt. It’s all part of growing up.”

As he reflects on his journey, Souhaib emphasizes the power of perseverance. “Trying is part of the road to success. Failure is not the end; it’s a lesson. When life gets tough, we must keep pushing forward.”

“Thanks to UNICEF and Azem programme that opened doors for me and prepared me for a better future ahead. I’m thankful for their belief in me and many young people like me. At the training, I saw many young people like me, all eager for opportunities. We need this support to carve our paths” he says.

AZEM On-The-Job training programme equips the most vulnerable young people with accredited vocational training, leading to employment. It is generously supported by the European Union.
