Mental health and well-being
Our mental health is a fundamental part of our overall health and well-being. As a parent, you play a massive role in supporting your child's mental well-being. Nurturing and loving care builds a strong foundation, helping your child to develop the social and emotional skills they need to lead a happy, healthy and fulfilled life.
This Parenting Month, UNICEF focuses on parenting for young people and children, underlining the importance of connection and safe, supportive relationships as a critical protective factor for mental health.
Parents have an impact on how adolescents interact with family, community, and societal factors that influence their development. Positive parenting can alleviate the influence of negative external factors on adolescent development. For example, by keeping track of friendships, parents can support their adolescent children in forming protective and affirming relationships with their peers.
In UNICEF's State of World companion report, young people reported that while family can be a tremendous source of support, it can pose significant risks to well-being through an overall lack of support, abuse and neglect, pressure and control, and financial instability.
This campaign page on parenting presents expert tips and resources to help you support your child's and your own mental health.
