Background information

The current population of the country is estimated at almost 11 million. 5,408,465 are men and 5,503,354 are women.

Administratively, the Republic of Haiti is divided into 10 departments, 41 arrondissements, 146 communes and 571 communal sections.

Located in the Caribbean Sea, the Republic of Haiti is situated on the second largest island of the Greater Antilles. It is bordered to the north by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Caribbean Sea, to the east by the Dominican Republic and to the west by Cuba (90 km) and Jamaica (190 km). With approximately 1,530 km of coastline, 386 km bordering the Dominican Republic and five (5) small islands, it occupies the western third of the entire island shared with the Dominican Republic (source: Institut haïtien de statistiques et d'informatique).

UNICEF is working in Haiti, in support of the Haitian state, to save children's lives, defend their rights and help them realize their potential, in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Every child has the right to be protected from violence, abuse and exploitation.
