Mirebalais, 05 avril 2023 – Since its reappearance, cholera has terrorized families, plunging the population into a state of fear and uncertainty. More than 80,000 cases of cholera have been reported in the country, exacerbating the health crisis. Pearl Marjorie, a mother, recalls with emotion the days when the mere idea that one of her children might be affected by the disease was an insurmountable anxiety.
"When we heard about the reappearance of cholera in Haiti, the fear of contracting the disease was constant. Just imagining one of my children falling ill with this terrible disease was terrifying."
Yet despite this ever-present fear, Pearl and her family found invaluable support through her commitment as a community health worker. By dedicating her efforts within her own community, Pearl played an essential role in educating her neighbors about preventive measures against cholera.
Since the re-emergence of the cholera epidemic in Haiti, UNICEF, and its partners, with financial support from the World Bank, have launched emergency interventions aimed at containing the spread of the disease and breaking the transmission chain within communities. From coordinating emergency interventions to distributing essential hygiene kits, every action had the goal of saving lives.
Pearl is one of the thousands of community workers deployed to carry out large-scale prevention activities. Each day, equipped with her megaphone and her knowledge about cholera prevention, she walks through the neighborhoods, house by house, to educate families on protective measures and guide suspected cholera cases to treatment centers set up by UNICEF.
"Every morning, I wake up knowing that the information I will share with my community can protect us, me and my community. Each day, I visit these homes to teach families how to purify water, practice good hand hygiene, and distribute essential hygiene kits."
Thanks to this strategy, hundreds of thousands of people have been made aware of the disease, and tens of thousands of hygiene kits have been distributed across the country. Despite logistical and security challenges, such as armed group clashes hindering access to affected areas, UNICEF has continued to strengthen medical capacities by providing essential equipment and supplies to acute diarrhea treatment centers.
In this hard-fought battle against cholera in Haiti, where the threat of the disease is exacerbated by logistical and security obstacles, dedicated individuals like Pearl Marjorie stand as beacons of hope within their community.
