Tbilisi, Georgia. 28 May 2026 – UNICEF, Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU), and the Georgian Association of Family Physicians have worked jointly to embed interpersonal communication as a core competency in undergraduate medical training—marking a major milestone in strengthening medical education in Georgia. This joint initiative contributes to improving the quality of care and building patient trust across the health system.
Through this partnership, TSMU implemented comprehensive curriculum reforms, introducing modern teaching methods and new communication-focused syllabi based on international best practices.
Key results include: integration of communication skills across all years of study, introduction of communication assessment in clinical exams (OSCE), development of innovative teaching tools, including practical training videos, and capacity building of academic staff through specialized trainings.
“Effective communication between healthcare providers and patients is fundamental to quality care—it shapes trust, decisions, and health outcomes. We commend Tbilisi State Medical University for its commitment to fully integrating communication training across all programmes and ensuring its long-term sustainability. By institutionalizing interpersonal communication skills, this initiative strengthens the health system and helps build a new generation of patient-centered professionals. UNICEF is proud to support efforts that put children and families at the center of healthcare, because stronger communication builds trust and more resilient health systems,” said Isabella Castrogiovanni, UNICEF Representative in Georgia.
This collaboration has also driven a significant cultural shift at TSMU—positioning communication as a core clinical skill within medical education—while contributing to improved patient engagement and increased confidence in healthcare services, including immunization.
Building on these achievements, TSMU and UNICEF will continue efforts to sustain and expand communication training, with a focus on child rights, disability inclusion, and digital health contexts.
