At the Rafah crossing
A moment of relief
Since the onset of the crisis, UNICEF has been working alongside the Government of Egypt, in close coordination with the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), to support medically evacuated Palestinians at a time of urgent need.
When families arrive at the Rafah crossing, they often carry little more than what they could gather in haste. For many children, the journey has been long and unsettling. With support from partners, including the European Union, UNICEF provides hygiene kits and essential supplies that meet immediate needs and bring a small but meaningful sense of comfort.
As families move into accommodation centrescenters across Egypt, these simple items help restore a sense of normalcy and dignity. For a child, something as basic as soap or personal items can provide reassurance in an unfamiliar environment.
Beyond this first moment of support, efforts are also focused on further strengthening the systems that continue to provide care.
UNICEF, with the support of the European Union, is supporting the Ministry of Health and Population to implement a green health facility model across 10 facilities serving Palestinian medical evacuees and host communities. This approach builds on existing national systems by promoting more efficient and sustainable use of resources such as energy and water, optimizing operational performance, and supporting the continued delivery of quality care. It contributes to strengthening the resilience of health services and ensuring they remain responsive under increased demand.
These improvements extend beyond the immediate response. Children and families in host communities also benefit from upgraded, more sustainable health services, ensuring that the investment strengthens the system for all.
Together, these efforts are helping children and their families move from uncertainty to stability, offering not only immediate relief, but a pathway to recovery supported by stronger, more resilient systems.
