UNICEF Expands Support for Displaced Palestinian Children and Host Communities in Egypt
Cairo, 17 November 2024 – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in partnership with the Government of Egypt and the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), is providing critical humanitarian assistance to support Palestinian children and families in Egypt displaced by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. With a generous €5 million (US$ 5.7 million) contribution from GFFO, this initiative aims to address the urgent needs of 2.4 million people, including displaced Palestinians and host communities in Greater Cairo, Alexandria, North Sinai and other governates in Egypt.
"We are grateful for the support of the German Federal Foreign Office that has enabled us to deliver essential interventions and support the recovery of children and families affected by the Gaza crisis,” said Nathalie Meyer, UNICEF Representative a.i. in Egypt. “This partnership allows us to address critical health, education, and protection needs while fostering system strengthening and resilience in the host communities.”
The support includes essential medical equipment and infection-prevention supplies for hospitals and primary healthcare facilities in areas hosting displaced populations. Furthermore, training and maintenance support will ensure sustainability. About 14,000 school-aged displaced children will be supported with education cash grant to access learning opportunities, including helping with the costs of purchasing critical education resources. Strengthened child protection centres will provide case management, mental health support, and cash assistance for families. Winterization kits will also be distributed to help families cope with harsh conditions.
Working closely with the Ministry of Health and Population, Ministry of Social Solidarity, the Egyptian Red Crescent Society, and development partners, UNICEF is committed to providing an effective and sustainable response, and ensuring the protection and wellbeing of every child, particularly in times of crisis.
