UNICEF Croatia calls for donations to save the lives of children in Gaza

Zagreb, May 28, 2025 – The children of Gaza are suffering in unimaginable conditions, reports UNICEF, the UN agency for children, which, despite extremely dangerous and difficult circumstances, remains on the ground with the children and families of Gaza.

The children of Gaza – whose lives should never be reduced to mere numbers – are now part of a long, painful list of unimaginable horrors: severe violations of children’s rights, blockade of humanitarian aid, hunger, constant forced displacement, destruction of hospitals, water supply systems, schools, and homes, UNICEF stated, urging Croatian citizens to support UNICEF’s efforts to save Gaza’s children through donations.

The children of Gaza, more than one million of them, make up half of the population there. Since the start of this devastating war, more than 50,000 children have been killed or injured.

Almost half a million people are on the brink of famine, while the entire population struggles to access food. It is estimated that nearly 71,000 children under the age of five will be acutely malnourished in the next 11 months, and over 14,100 children could die from hunger. Nearly 17,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women will also need treatment for acute malnutrition.

UNICEF uses pre-positioned supplies and, at every possible opportunity, strives to deliver urgently needed food, water, medical supplies, and special therapeutic supplements to Gaza, enabling malnourished children to survive. In this way, between March and April this year alone, more than 85,000 children were screened for malnutrition, and over 3,500 diagnosed children were admitted to treatment programs with special therapeutic food that saves lives, while tens of thousands of children received nutritional supplements to prevent hunger and malnutrition.

Families in Gaza are fighting for bare survival. They are trapped and have nowhere to flee in search of safety. The land they cultivated has been destroyed. They cannot reach the sea from which they fished. Bakeries are closed, water supplies are dwindling, and store shelves are nearly empty.

In the past month, more than 75 percent of households have reported limited access to water – they do not have enough drinking water, cannot wash their hands when needed, and are often forced to choose between showering, cleaning, and cooking, reports UNICEF, which is making intensive efforts in Gaza to secure drinking water.

UNICEF once again calls on all parties to the conflict to end the violence, protect civilians, including children, respect international humanitarian law, allow urgent delivery of humanitarian aid, and release all hostages.

Since October 2023, UNICEF and its partners have been helping deliver life-saving humanitarian aid to children and families. With the help of donors, UNICEF will continue to support the children and families of Gaza, ensuring therapeutic food for malnutrition treatment, drinking water, and basic medical and hygiene supplies.

The children of Gaza need protection. They need food, water, and medicine. They need a ceasefire. But above all, they need urgent, collective action to end this once and for all, UNICEF concludes.
