Tarl: A hope for teachers in conflict zones
Teachers in crisis areas are taking advantage of teaching at the right level to raise the level of their pupils.

The Dedeb Sonel public school, in the Mayo Tsanaga department, takes in internally displaced persons. At this school, Bouba Vayarai runs a class of 10 pupils for the Teaching at the right level (TaRL) remedial programme. He has drawn up follow-up sheets for each of them. In his view, the framework for teaching activities gives teachers very little flexibility to provide academic support in the time available, which prevents pupils from developing literacy and numeracy skills in ordinary classes. In addition, the problem of overcrowded classrooms and difficult teaching conditions is a reality in rural areas. Thanks to the training he has received from the UNICEF team, the teacher intends to "transform" his pupils in 3 months. He hopes that these remedial courses can fan the flame of academic excellence in rural schools.
For children and young people deprived of education or whose schooling has been interrupted as a result of conflict and crisis, poverty and marginalisation, the support classes will enable them to catch up and return to school with the others, with basic reading and mathematical skills. This will enable them to make a fresh start in their education.
The North and Far North regions of Cameroon are classified as priority education zones because of the low school enrollment rates in these areas. School teachers confess that the Teaching at the right level approach is a breath of fresh air for their schools.
