The ambition of the Initiative “Connect my School” initiative was launched on 12 April 2021 at the public school in Melen by the Ministry of Basic Education and UNICEF, in the presence of development partners and from the private sector.
Connect my School aims to connect schools to the Internet by providing them with access to online and offline teaching and learning via tablets, including for out-of-school adolescents.
The infrastructural component of the "Connect my school” called a " e-container / digital HUB" built with recycled materials and powered by solar energy enables children and teachers to use multimedia equipment and other electronic learning tools.
The pilot phase of the initiative intends to experiment and extend the use of sustainable models intended to improve access to quality education in primary and secondary education through the use of tics in classrooms and the construction of hubs. digital (e-containers) in 17 schools in urban, peri-urban and rural areas.
It is certainly no coincidence that the launch of this great initiative for education is taking off in the commune of Yaounde 3, known as the “Centre of science and learning”. So I hope that the launch of Connect My School is the start of a broad collective movement that will improve children's learning outcomes across the country.
I like using the Tablet and also the fact that we are learning in a group of 4 or 5 students keeps me awake. It’s fun. This way of learning permits me to acquire knowledge in French, history, geography, mathematics and at the same time, I can also train myself how to use the e-tools such as typing with Word application, calculating with Excel and then doing research on internet.
I like to teach in multimedia ventilated room . Because of the solar panels we always have high-speed internet connection that allows us to quickly and meaningfully reach the goal of a lesson and go beyond. I’m happy, I don’t need to write or talk much, the lessons’ preparation and classroom management are much easier. It gives me more time to integrate and engage with students’ activities and exercises.
Through Connect My School, in preparation of the 2021/22 Back to School, UNICEF support to Government envisions to achieve sustainable connection of ICT learning facilities to nearly 70,000 primary school pupils and 4,000 Out of school adolescents and children with disabilities in 5 municipalities.
This will reinforce both access to quality education and school’s governance. This innovation is aligned to both national policies and municipal dynamics.
