Statement by UNICEF on the landslides in the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar

09 July 2026

DHAKA, July 9, 2026 - UNICEF is deeply concerned by the terrible landslide in the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, which occurred yesterday in Camp 5. UNICEF mourns the reported loss of at least 4 girls’ lives, while the full extent of the impact is still being assessed. Our thoughts are with the children, their families, and everyone affected by this tragic incident.

This tragedy happened just one day after flash floods and landslides claimed the lives of nine people, including children, in the camps on July 7. The back-to-back emergencies underscore the severe risks that the monsoon season poses to children and families living in extremely vulnerable conditions. Heavy rainfall continues to increase the threat of flooding and landslides across the camps, putting lives at risk and disrupting access to essential services.

UNICEF and its partners have been closely monitoring the situation from the onset and are coordinating with government authorities and humanitarian partners to support emergency response efforts. We stand ready to provide life-saving assistance and protection to affected children and families as needs are identified.

UNICEF reiterates its commitment to supporting the Government of Bangladesh and humanitarian partners to help keep children safe throughout the monsoon season while ensuring they can continue to access critical services, including health care, clean water, protection, psychosocial support, and education wherever possible.
