The Equitable School Infrastructure Investment project, funded by USAID and implemented by UNICEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sport, is setting a new standard for Albania’s schools. This initiative goes beyond repairing buildings; it’s about creating safe, inclusive, and inspiring spaces where every child has the opportunity to excel.
Two schools in Gjirokastër, the 9-year school Urani Rumbo and Andon Zako Cajupi, have been selected for comprehensive renovations. Both schools are central to the community, and these upgrades aim to address critical needs like heating, insulation, and energy efficiency. The changes will ensure that students have the environment they need to focus, engage, and succeed.
When classrooms are cold, poorly lit, or overcrowded, learning suffers. Education isn’t just about textbooks; it’s about the spaces that support students’ growth and well-being. By upgrading facilities, this project ensures that children in Gjirokastër have access to the resources they need to thrive.
Anila, a fifth grader, highlights the project’s inclusive approach. “We came together with our peers to share how we envisioned our school. At first, I didn’t believe it would matter. But then I realized—they were serious. ‘Your voice counts,’ they said.”
This commitment to inclusivity is one of the project’s strongest features. Local government units, parents, teachers, and students are actively involved in shaping the future of their schools. Their input ensures the renovations truly reflect the needs of those who use these spaces every day.
For students like Eno Gjini, the renovations couldn’t come soon enough.
We barely have heat for an hour in the morning, and in some classrooms, there’s no heating at all. The improvements will make a huge difference. We’ll finally be able to learn in a warmer, more welcoming environment.
Professional architects are leading the design process, focusing on key upgrades to create energy-efficient, sustainable schools that meet modern standards. The project’s impact goes beyond Gjirokastër, symbolizing a broader commitment to inclusive and sustainable development across Albania.
“Thank you for being here today! It’s such a pleasure to witness your involvement in shaping your school’s future. Your ideas, focused on student well-being and compassion, are truly inspiring. Today, your voices are being heard, and that is powerful. Thank you for making a difference,” said Mischere Kawas, USAID Director in Albania.
UNICEF Representative Murat Sahin praised the community’s efforts, saying, “Congratulations to the teachers and students here—this school is truly impressive. The traditional design of the building is fantastic, and if improvements can be made while preserving that, it’s even better. Our goal is to secure resources for 100 schools, each with its own unique design, to ensure every school has the support it needs to succeed.”
Minister of Education, Sport, and Youth Ogerta Manastirliu emphasized the project’s collaborative spirit: “Together, we are setting new standards for school infrastructure. By working hand in hand, we can ensure every child has access to a high-quality learning environment.”
UNICEF’s Mirlinda Bushati summed it up perfectly: “Modern, well-equipped school infrastructure creates a safe, comfortable, and inspiring environment that enhances focus, fosters creativity, and supports every student’s ability to reach their full potential. Every child deserves this.”
