In the war-torn landscape of Yemen, where necessities can be scarce, the pursuit of education becomes an uphill journey. For millions of children, the lack of essential school supplies represents an insurmountable obstacle, forcing them to abandon their dreams. But amidst the hardships, a glimmer of hope shines through in the form of students’ backpacks, embarking on a long journey from overseas to Yemen’s classrooms.
Beyond mere cargo, these backpacks carry hope to Yemeni children in 14 districts in 7 Yemeni governorates to weave a vital educational lifeline through the Restoring Education and Learning project (REAL) - a three-year initiative with different interventions including equipping 560,000 students with crucial tools like school bags and learning materials.
These school bags were distributed to students in primary education. Each bag contains notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, erasers, pencil sharpeners, and a box of colored pencils.
Procurement and Logistic Challenges: Ensuring Deliveries Despite Complexity
Nabil Al-Barakani, a dedicated UNICEF coordinator in Taizz, explains that despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, international shipping restrictions, global shortage of containers, and the challenging terrain of the country, school bags successfully made it to the warehouses in all seven governorates and eventually landed in the hands of the young students. The commitment to overcoming procurement obstacles and pandemic hurdles emphasizes determination to reach even remote areas.
Creating Level Ground for Learning
For the 25-year-old teacher Abdulrahman Attas from Hadhramaut, the school bag is not just a container; it's a solution. He witnesses firsthand the struggles of students forced to share single notebooks or rely on pre-owned supplies, facing potential expulsion for inadequate tools. The bag breaks this cycle, creating a level playing field where every child can focus on learning not the lack of necessities.
Planting Seeds of Education: Triumphant Returns to Classrooms
Abdulhafeez Al-Munaifi, Director of the Education Office in Taizz, remembers the jubilant scenes during the backpack distribution at Saba’a School for girls. Witnessing the smiles blossoming on the faces of female students as they received their bags reaffirmed the project's aim: to restore education and bridge the gap between students and their classrooms.
Lifting Burdens, Inspiring Returns
In Zabid District, Al-Hodaydah, Samar Al-Muhannabi, Principal of Al-Thawra Basic School, speaks of the 133 orphans, 57 displaced children, and 96 marginalized students, each burdened by the struggle to afford a school bag. UNICEF's intervention lifted this burden, motivating students to return to classrooms and attracting those who had initially dropped out due to a lack of resources.
Relief and Opportunity for All
Schoolteacher Hanan Salemin Al-Marawa District emphasizes the bag's significance, not just for its contents but for the relief it brings to families strained by economic hardship.
As Hussein Al-Awlaki, Principal of Al-Hamza School, points out that this project tackles the root of absenteeism: unequal access. By providing these bags, UNICEF removes the financial barrier for families struggling to support multiple children, ensuring every student has the tools they need to attend consistently and diligently follow classes/learn. In essence, these backpacks pave the way for a future built on the bedrock of equal education, where every child has the chance to pursue their dreams, unburdened by the weight of poverty.
More Than Backpacks, More Than Stories
The school bag journey transcends education obstacles nationwide. It carries not just supplies but hope, motivation, and a renewed chance at education. Sarah Hassan, a teacher in Zabid, aptly summarizes the impact by saying "Without the bag, many students will not be able to continue their education."
These backpacks become more than just containers; they transform into vessels of dreams, etching new narratives onto the pages of a nation's future. By providing crucial school supplies, Yemeni children are empowered to write their own stories. The REAL project is the result of the tireless work of UNICEF, the World Bank, and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
