Abubacar Sultan begins functions as UNICEF Representative in Venezuela

Caracas, October 25th, 2021.- The new Representative of the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, in Venezuela, Abubacar Sultan, began his duties this week.

Mr. Abubacar Sultan is an educational professional, specializing in Social Sciences, and began his work for the rights of the child when he was 24 years old in his homeland Mozambique.

Before his appointment in Venezuela, he served as Senior Advisor on alliances with Regional Intergovernmental Organizations, in the UNICEF office for Eastern and Southern Africa (ESARO).

Previously, he was UNICEF's Representative in Angola in 2016 and Guinea-Bissau in 2012. Before that, he served as Senior Advisor for Child Protection at UNICEF headquarters in New York, where he led the development of the organization's global strategy against violence, exploitation, and child abuse. In this position, he provided technical support to UNICEF offices on the protection and promotion of the rights of children and adolescents globally, advising different governments around the world.

Upon his arrival in Venezuela, Mr. Sultan was received by the Vice Minister of Multilateral Affairs of the Ministry of Popular Power for Foreign Relations, Rubén Darío, with whom he discussed the agency's priorities in Venezuela in favor of children's rights.

Mr. Sultán reaffirmed his commitment to support the country's efforts to achieve the rights of all Venezuelan children and adolescents, within the framework of UNICEF's international cooperation with the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
