In 2023, UNICEF in partnership with UNICEF Global Learning Innovation Hub based in Helsinki supported the Ministry of preschool and school education of Uzbekistan to pilot Eduten - digital math learning platform based on artificial intelligence. It is used in more than 50 countries since 2017.

During 12 weeks of pilot one regular math lesson per week was replaced with Eduten for 527 school children in Tashkent-city and Tashkent region. Teachers applied Eduten to coordinate exercise activities for their students. Platform has been integrated in regular teaching process in line with the national curriculum. The idea was that platform is used to support and compliment teachers’ work rather than impose additional burden.

Results of the pilot evaluation show remarkable increase of learning outcomes, with an average +16.9% improvement in mathematics skills. Learning outcomes of students who used Eduten were higher than outcomes of their peers who did not use this platform.

Students appreciated that exercises are developed in a format of games and provided in interactive way. This made them enjoy active learning process. In addition, school children of grade 5, with whom Eduten was piloted, could learn immediately after answering if the answer was correct or incorrect. This helps to form correct problem-solving strategies and encourages students to continue their learning.

“My interest in studying Math increased tremendously. Now, I am interested in getting deeper understanding of math” – told Shirinova Farzona, Grade 5th student from the pilot school #104 of Sergeli district, Tashkent City.

Teachers highlighted that Eduten automatically adapts to students’ needs, so that each student has own trajectory for learning. Advanced students got more challenging exercises, and less advanced ones got easier ones. This enhanced motivation for everyone.

The Eduten platform is also a powerful assessment tool. By conducting exams through Eduten teachers can quickly track the progress and challenges of each student, that helps teachers to provide personalized feed-back and support.

“Eduten’s personalized, gamified approach benefit both teachers and students. It makes math engaging for students, helpings to develop logical thinking, problem solving and analytical skills. Teachers receive valuable analytics to tailor their lesson plans. Also, parents noticed their children’s increased interest in learning. This pilot demonstrates the immense potential of EdTech to transform education for better results” – says Alberto Biancoli, Head of Education, UNICEF Uzbekistan.
